1970 Torino

laurel_torino

For 1970, the Torino became the primary model and the Fairlane was a sub-series of Torino.

The styling was completely redesigned to a more coke bottle styling, influenced by aircrafts like narrow waits and bulging forward and rear fuselages.

The car featured a more prominent long hood, short deck styling, and was wider and lower than previous models. Overall, the car appeared much more aerodynamic.

A 4-door hardtop was a new body style, with the “Torino Brougham” as top trim level, which was available was a 2- and 4-door hardtop, and 4-door station wagon. The sporty “Torino GT” returned and was available as a 2-door sportsroof and convertible. The “Torino Cobra” also returned as a 2-door sportsroof, only.

The engine lineup changed with only the 250ci I-6, 302ci 1×2bbl, and 352ci 1×2bbl being carried over. See the “Engines” section for more info.

Overall, 1970 was a successful year for Torino and was selected as Motor Trend’s “Car of the Year.” 230,411 total Torinos were produced.

The 1965 Fairlane

laurel_fairlane

It also consisted of similar body styles: base Fairlane and Fairlane 500 two-door coupes and four-door sedans, and Fairlane 500 and Sports Coupe two-door hardtops. The standard station wagon was also continued.

All 1965 models featured 14-inch wheels as standard, in place of the earlier 13-inch wheels, and Fordomatic was finally phased out, leaving the Cruise-O-Matic as the only automatic available for the Fairlane. The 260 was also dropped after 1964, leaving the two-barrel 289 as the base V8.

Styling features for 1965 included body-color headlight bezels for the deluxe models and rectangular taillight lenses, a return to the 1962-1963 trunk lid, along with less chrome on the body and a small standup hood ornament.

The Debut

laurel_debut

Ford’s Mustang was conceived in full knowledge that in the mid-’60s the biggest population bubble in history was coming of age in America. Baby boomers would rule the ’60s and there was little reason to think they wanted cars that were anything like their parents’ cars. The production Mustang was shown to the public for the first time inside the Ford Pavilion at the New York World’s Fair on April 17, 1964 — two months and nine days after the Beatles first came to New York to appear on The Ed Sullivan Show. It went on sale at Ford dealers that same day.

1971 Ford Mustang Boss 351

laurel_boss

When the 1971 Boss 351 appeared, Car & Driver mourned the fact the new beast would have to exist as a street car rather than a track star. Drivers of that Boss probably weren’t disappointed in the 351 cubic-inch V8 engine capable of 330 horsepower and 370 pounds-feet of torque. In fact, the main complaints from the reviewers came from the styling cues of the new Mustang 351. Performance-wise, it delivered, running from 0-60 in 5.8 seconds and the quarter-mile in 14.1 seconds at 100.6 mph. That performance still makes it one of the fastest of all time.
